NELC Teacher Selected for Emerson Excellence Honors

NORMANDY, MO -- Lauren Quick, kindergarten teacher at the Normandy Early Learning Center, is the 2020 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award recipient for the Normandy Schools Collaborative.

Dr. Crystal Hunter, ELC Director/Principal, calls Quick an amazing educator.

“Ms. Quick encourages students to take academic risks and treats their efforts with respect,” Hunter said. “She embraces all children with kindness and high expectations and has been able to consistently build a strong and supportive community in her classroom.”

Hunter says her staff’s ability to prepare for instruction in this COVID environment is due in part to Quick’s commitment to students.

“Ms. Quick continued to work on realigning some of our building processes and resources during our shut down,” Hunter continued. “It was her leadership and organization that allowed our building to start this year utilizing research-based practices for students.”

Quick is grateful to her students and colleagues.

“The way we learn together and support each other makes any obstacle surmountable,” she said. “I am so lucky to have worked with so many wonderful students over the years.”

A graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, Quick chose to pursue a teaching degree after volunteering at a summer camp as a teen.

“I was a camp counselor for children with special needs,” she recalled. “My mom also ran an at-home daycare. I was always working with younger kids and knew that, from a very young age, this is what I wanted to do.”

Quick joined Normandy in 2015 after teaching for 10 years at Confluence Academy in St. Louis.

In her spare time, Quick enjoys reading, crocheting and attending Bar Method exercise classes.

“During non-COVID times, I love going to concerts and traveling,” she explained. “I love spending time with family and friends.”

This aunt to 10 “amazing nieces and nephews,” was incredibly shocked and overwhelmed by the Emerson honor.

“I work with an amazing staff and I know there are so many incredible teachers throughout our district,” she said. “I am very humbled by this recognition.”
