    Note: The questions and answers listed below are those most frequently posed to district leadership regarding our school re-opening plan for the 2020-2021 school year.

  • Q. When will school officially start? Will school be in-person or virtual (remote)?

    A.  School starts Tuesday, September 8 (the day after Labor Day), with training for teachers occurring the three weeks prior. Our current plan is to offer virtual (remote) instruction for all students in grades PreK to 12. For parents of students in grades PreK to 4th, we will offer an in-person instruction option. As the COVID-19 situation is in constant flux, we are closely monitoring trends in community spread and will change to all-remote instruction if necessary.

  • Q. Will the district provide Chromebooks for students to use for remote learning?

    A.  Yes, the district will provide Chromebooks and tablet computers for students to use. We will notify parents of the dates/location to pick up the devices.

    There will not be a fee charged to get a device. Previously we charged a nonrefundable fee for insurance to cover the device, however, the district has received a grant to cover these charges.

  • Q. For students in grades PreK-4, will the district still use the tier start/dismissal times?

    A. Tiers will remain the same for all students (virtual and in-person) as this will allow us to do social distancing on buses. Also if we and when everyone returns for in-person instruction, it would be disruptive to staff and families to change start times mid year. The chart below shows the start and dismissal times for each school:

    Tier 1

    Lucas Crossing and Bel-Nor:  7:20 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.
    Early release time: 12:15 p.m.  

    Tier 2 

    Normandy High School, Barack Obama:  8:10 a.m.- 3:20 p.m.
    Early release (Barack Obama): 1:05 p.m.  
    Late start (NHS): 10:25 a.m.  

    Tier 3

    Jefferson, Early Learning Center, Washington:  9 a.m. - 4:10 p.m.
    Early release time: 1:55 p.m.

  • Q. How do I register for the remote learning option?

    A.  It is not a requirement that all students attend class in-person. As part of the registration process, families can choose if they would like for their child(ren) attend in-person or virtually. This virtual learning commitment will be on a learning platform. If you are interested in remote learning for your child(ren), you can make that selection when registering for classes.

    Each student in grades K-12 will receive their own device/Chromebook to support remote learning. Parents can pick up devices on Sept. 2-4 at Normandy High School. (Kindergarten students will pick up their devices at the Normandy Early Learning Center.) See flier for details.

  • Q. How are we to safely open schools when the virus is not under control?

    A.  As this situation is changing daily, we are closely monitoring local statistics and data from the St. Louis County Department of Health (DOH), meeting weekly with superintendents from around the region, as well as collaborating with local health agencies and experts to ensure we have the most accurate and current information for this critical decision. The bottom line is we will serve kids as best we can, whether it’s in person or remote.

  • Q.  Describe the PPE that teachers will receive.

    A.  Principals will receive up to five washable cloth face coverings for each student and staff in their building. Teachers and others working directly with students will also receive KN95 masks. We have approximately 100,000 masks already ordered for staff and students. Face shields are also available for teachers. Principals will have PPE kits with more extensive protective equipment available in case of a nurse absence.

  • Q.  Describe the plan for staff taking children’s temperatures when they enter the building?

    A.  Parents will conduct a wellness assessment of their child prior to sending them to school. Staff are not required to take student temperatures. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a fever is a rare symptom in children with COVID-19, however non-touch thermometers will be available for classroom teachers and nurses if needed for student evaluation.

  • Q. What is NSC’s decision making process for closing down buildings or classrooms?

    A.  A decision to close a classroom or building is based on the percentage of positive tests in a classroom or a building. We will coordinate this decision with local health officials to determine if a classroom/school requires closure and if so, the length of time.

  • Q.  How and what do we communicate with parents after a positive case occurs in a school?

    A.  The district will send a letter notifying parents and school staff. If a child/staff member was directly impacted, that individual/family will receive a call from a building principal, counselor, or nurse as part of the contact tracing process. (The person who tested positive is confidential information and we can not share that information.) The family has the option to get tested at their healthcare provider.
