The Normandy Schools Collaborative has been awarded the 2017 Focus St. Louis What’s Right with the Region Award.

The Normandy Schools Collaborative was recognized in the category, Fostering Regional Cooperation, for having “brought entities together to create a new synergy and improve efficiency and effectiveness.”

Specifically, Normandy is being recognized for its collaboration with Wyman Center and Beyond Housing to provide needed services and supports to help students achieve academically. Wyman strategically coordinates ‘wraparound services’ such as counseling, tutoring, and afterschool programs for students in the Collaborative to improve academic performance in the classroom. Beyond Housing partners with Normandy on several initiatives including providing Family Engagement Liaisons. The liaisons make home visits, secure services for families, and work with parents on topical issues like bullying, financial empowerment and healthy living.

“This is the concept of ‘collective impact,’” said Dr. Charles Pearson, Superintendent of Schools for the Normandy Schools Collaborative. “Organizations come together, bringing their particular skills and resources to the table. Our wraparound partners provide the resources needed to mitigate for the challenges many of our students face daily. Teachers create powerful lessons that engage students. Principals protect the learning environment and work daily to support effective instruction. Support staff maintain quality spaces for learning, provide nutritious meals, tend to communications and interactions with children and adults, and Executive Leadership works continuously to support the work of all. As a result, we are continuously improving.”

“We are extremely proud to receive this recognition as it is a testament to the forward-focused, community-centered thinking helping put our district back on the right track,” Pearson continued. “Thank you to all of our staff, families and partners for your tireless efforts to provide the best for our children!”

Other organizations recognized in the Fostering Regional Cooperation category include the Affton School District, Forest Park Forever, and the Veterans Business Resource Center. Honorees were nominated by the public and selected by a panel of community judges for their impact and service to the community.

The awards ceremony will be held Thursday, May 11 at the Sheldon Concert Hall in mid-town St. Louis. For more information, visit
